The recently released NBA 2K 2020 includes players from the WNBA for the first time in the game’s history. Fans of the series showed excitement across Instagram posts, Reddit reviews, and YouTube videos as far back as the release of the first trailer, which showcased gameplay footage of A’ja Wilson from the Las Vegas Aces.
2K, according to NBA 2K producer Felicia Steelhouse, is the perfect stage to show off these athletes to millions of players worldwide. “We have an opportunity to represent these women to millions of 2K fans in all of their strength and swagger, from their hair to their shoes to their moves on the court, and we want to get it right,” said Steelhouse in a Dev (game developer) Diary on Facebook.
Players will be able to play as all 12 WNBA teams, along with stars such as A’ja Wilson and Elena Delle Donne, playing with them through the game’s “franchise” and “season” modes that have been a staple in the 2K series. Avid gamer and forward for the Washington Mystics Aerial Powers, in an interview with SB Nation, said, “I think it’s gonna bring more excitement to people who game. People who don’t game but like the WNBA are going to get into it. And the people who don’t like the WNBA, a lot of them play games, so I feel like a lot of them are gonna be like, ‘Let me see what they’re working with, especially when they go against other people.”
The popularity of the WNBA in the new edition of 2K will determine the possibility of a standalone game in the future, but until then, players can look forward to playing with the WNBA on NBA 2K20, which is currently available for purchase.
