Lady Purples have stellar season, win district championship, but fall in regional final game

After having a 4-0 record against district 14 opponents and a 14-2-3 win-loss-tie record in the regular season, the Lady Purples were ready to take the postseason by storm. Throughout 19 games, the Lady Purples scored 73 goals.

Whitaker Buchanan leads the Lady Purples offense with 36 goals, making her one of the top contributors. Asked about whether or not the transition to post-season would be difficult, she said, “No, the girls who have stepped up are very consistent in the way they play, and our team has emphasized how important it is we play our best soccer during post season, and everyone has been working really hard in and out of practice.”

The girls finished the regular season first in the district, facing the winner of the wildcard game between Warren Central and Warren East; which Warren Central won. They began the postseason on October 9th against Warren Central. After beating Central previously 5-0, the Lady Purples once again won in convincing fashion at 6-0. Senior Caroline Buchanan led the team with three goals to send them to the district finals against Greenwood, who they had also previously beaten 3-1.

The Lady Purples scored in the eighth minute of the first half and ended the half 2-0. The second half began to go back and forth between the two teams. Five minutes into the second half, two rapid goals from Emma Kate Widener, Junior from Bowling Green, and Anna Haddock, Junior from Greenwood, made the score 3-1. Greenwood added pressure through another goal from Anna Haddock, which increased Greenwood’s score to 3-2 with 6 minutes left. However, the Lady Purples stayed strong and won the 14th district championship.

The Region 4 Girls Tournament is at Barren County, and the Lady Purples began the tournament with a bye and played against the winner between Franklin-Simpson and Glasgow; which Glasgow won on penalty kicks. They cruised by with a score of 8-0, leading them to the region championship against Greenwood, the third time the two teams have faced each other this season.

The Greenwood game was nothing short of a nail-biter. After battling for 80 minutes, the game headed into overtime without either team scoring a point. A penalty shootout ended early as two of the Bowling Green players missed, losing the game and cutting their season short. The girls ended their season with a win-loss-tie record of 17-2-4 and a 59 goal differential against opponents.

When asked about the season as a whole, Coach Correa said, “[We’re] disappointed that our season ended with the region final but proud of the way the players battled all season long. It was a good season overall with players stepping up into new roles and gaining experience. The three seniors - Caroline Buchanan, Emma Willgruber and Talia Woodruff - did an outstanding job leading the Purples this year.”
