YouTube permeates Bowling Green High School

YouTube is changing the planet one upload at a time, moreso than any other social media platform. Since its inception in 2005, the platform has gained massive popularity among millennials and given a voice to anyone with a camera, a computer, and an idea they want to share.

Egan Copeland, a junior at Bowling Green High School, thinks that YouTube has become popular since it has such a diverse range of content. He uses YouTube for purposes other than entertainment, like marching band videos. Since Egan is in marching band, he uses YouTube to learn more skills and techniques that contribute to performing in the band.

Egan says, “YouTube has become more popular because it’s such an easy thing to access… I gain more with YouTube than with social media like Instagram or SnapChat, which are mainly used to follow other people, but on YouTube you can find content that can contribute to bettering yourself.”

Junior Ali Kargoly created his YouTube channel 8 months ago and has no intentions to ever stop producing content. Ali originally had a channel with his best friend, but plans changed; he decided to produce his own content. Kargoly’s content is for the most part comical, but he also has some serious videos, such as his tribute to Pascali, a young man Kargoly knew who died earlier this year.

Ali enjoys how YouTube is different than other social media platforms because it takes hard work and interesting content to gain a following, unlike other social media apps, where follower lists usually consist of a mix of bots and people the user already knows in real life.

“It’s different because you have to work so hard to get more subscribers. My favorite part about making videos is making my fans happy. When I finish editing videos, I do it better than I expected.¨ said Ali.

As YouTube continues to draw young users, more and more content creators like Kargoly will grow. Might the next big Youtube star be a Purple? Time will tell.
