Volleyball team taking strides

In the last year and a half, Bowling Green High School’s volleyball team has had a revitalization-of-sorts. The team, which is fairly young, has demonstrated powerful potential.

The team has increased the rigor in their training, leading to players with improved athletic prowess.

“This year we did more structured conditioning to work on specific skills. I think I've improved since preseason” said Shelby Beardson, a junior varsity (JV) player at BGHS.

Another reason for the team’s newfound strength can be found with the advent of younger players on the team who demonstrate precise skill and formidable play.

“I would just like to say that as an underclassman I know that we all work super hard to play in the spot that we play in now, and I believe everyone has worked to earn their spot on the team,” said Kelci Morrison, a freshman player on the volleyball team.

There has been a mass turnover of students playing volleyball. The team, which housed a majority senior varsity team last school year, now accommodates more freshmen playing in the varsity team.

“As athletes get into their junior and senior years they start seeing the writing on the wall. The freshmen and younger players will get more playing time than them, so then they weigh their options… all summer we were practicing four days a week, and that's very difficult, and that's why we only have three seniors. And that’s pretty much a natural progression which happens when people are like, ‘Do I really want to keep this dedication up when I'm not sure about my playing time?’” said Amy Wininger, the BGHS volleyball coach.

Throughout this transition of players and the occasional defeat, she has not lost her optimism.

“Our record is not where I’d love it to be; but, we are seeing wonderful growth every game,” added Coach Wininger, “we create a community of support and encouragement and we enjoy playing volleyball.”

“We work to get to the next level of excellence,” said Wininger.
