Uncrustables: your subpar backup lunch choice

We’ve all been there. The bell finally rings for lunch, and you rush to the commons to realize you’ve got two options: a hot lunch from the inevitably long line that takes time out of your already brief lunch period or a good ol’ peanut butter and jelly in the shorter deli line. You go for the short line and pick up the classic Uncrustable and a bag of chips. You return to your seat and tear open the clear wrapping to enjoy your sandwich. Once you open it, you realize ‘enjoy’ might be a strong word: it’s soggy and stale or overly crusty.

Junior Josh West says, “The majority of Uncrustables are just visually unappealing. I eat one every day and honestly they aren’t the greatest. By the time I get back to my seat and realize it sucks, I don’t want to go back to the line.”

Your body is crying for food, but you don’t want to eat this now, and you don’t want to go back through the line and spend more money. Disappointed, you throw it away and settle on being hungry the rest of the day - a big mistake.

For many students, this is a major problem. These students depend on the school for two meals a day and need to eat. The go to lunch choice if you don’t like the hot lunch tends to be an Uncrustable and a bag of chips. If your sandwich looks like a bruise, eating your chips just isn’t enough. A disappointing PB&J, believe it or not, can result in dire educational repercussions. Hunger can cause students to feel tired and unmotivated for their afternoon classes, which leads to bad grades and bad attitudes. The more students have this problem, the more their grades drop, leading to an overall decline in morale and educational quality. Now, the lunch staff works tirelessly to provide a meal for students, so a soggy sandwich is in no way their fault; the company, Smuckers, is the clear culprit, supplying consequences beyond the questionable taste and texture.
