Jacksonville Madden Tournament experiences deadly shooting

A shooting took place at a Madden 19 e-sport competition in Jacksonville, Florida on Sunday, August 26, 2018, leaving two killed and nine injured. The competition was a tournament for players of Madden NFL 19, a licensed football game from Electronic Arts, to play against each other for a grand prize of 5,000 dollars.

At exactly 1:34 P.M., suspect David Katz reportedly opened fire on other competitors after losing a match in Madden 19. Eli Clayton, 22, of Woodland Hills, California, and Taylor Robertson, 27, of Ballard, West Virginia were killed. Medical officials said David Echevarria, 28, was treated for minor injuries and released while three others remained hospitalized Monday in good condition. George Amadeo II, 17, suffered unspecified injuries; Alexander Madunic, 27, was treated for a gunshot wound to his foot; and Christopher McFarland, 31, was treated for a bullet graze to his head.

Survivors posted multiple audio and video clips of the shooting. One audio clip captured firecracker-like sounds from the gun and screaming, while a video clip of the game included footage of the the Xbox controller disconnecting around the second or third shot. The player is heard shouting, “What did he shoot me with?”

David Katz committed suicide before police arrived at the scene.
