BG seniors compete in Distinguished Young Woman

On Sunday, September 23rd, Noel Cash and Olivia Johnson competed in the annual Distinguished Young Woman of Warren County competition. All participants compete and are subsequently judged in five events: an interview portion conducted backstage, a fitness routine, self-expression—here the competitors are judged on their poise and confidence— Scholastics, and talent. Noel won a physical fitness award for her athletic routine, and Olivia won the Scholastic Award for her competitive academics.

Olivia, a senior at Bowling Green High School, takes higher-level classes and has maintained a high grade point average, and her demanding schedule led to her winning the prestigious Scholastic Award. “My hard work throughout my high school career payed off through winning the Scholastic Award,” said Olivia.

Noel has danced her entire life and is a varsity cheerleader at BGHS. Her rigorous fitness routine allowed her to win the physical fitness award. Unlike Olivia, however, she isn’t the first in her family to receive this accolade. In 1990, her mother, Amy Cash, competed in the Distinguished Young Women of Warren County program and won a physical fitness award. The younger Cash’s godmother also won the fitness award.

“It was a great experience, and I appreciate all the friends I made,” said Noel.

Olivia and Noel both received scholarship money for winning their individual events. If they attend certain Kentucky colleges, such as Western Kentucky University, they are eligible for even more scholarship money.

“Overall, I’m thankful for this program and the opportunities that it brought me,” said Olivia.
